One Touch Switch: Simplified Broadband Switching
Switching broadband providers can be a complex, long-winded task that prevents most people from attempting it, but soon things are about to change.
One-touch switching is a new regulation to make the broadband switching experience easier for consumers, once and for all.
We are going to break down all you need to know about what one-touch switching is, why Ofcom introduced the new regulation and what this means for you going forward.
Understanding One-Touch Switching for Broadband and Landline Services
What is one-touch switching? One-touch switching is a new regulation introduced by Ofcom to simplify the process of changing broadband or home phone providers for consumers in the UK.
Under the new process, a residential customer will only need to contact their new home broadband provider to switch, and won’t need to speak to their current provider before making the move.
This offers customers an easy, hassle-free way to seek out a new provider for faster speeds, better connectivity and so much more, without the previous challenges that came with switching – shady deals, long hold times to speak to retention teams, and providers just doing everything they could to prevent you from leaving.
One touch switch is all about giving power back to the consumer: making the switching process more straightforward and accessible so you can make an informed decision that will benefit you and your future.
One-Touch Switching Timeline: From Concept to Implementation
In September 2021, Ofcom, the telecommunications regulator, announced that it was introducing new rules to make it easier for residential customers to change their fixed voice and broadband service provider.
However, ideas about an easier way to change providers have been floating around as early as 2019 when Ofcom began development on a potential switching process.
In June 2022, the industry established The One Touch Switching Company Ltd (TOTSCo) as a vehicle to take responsibility for the development and operation of a messaging platform (known as the TOTSCo Hub) which would aid the process of switching.
The initial deadline to fully implement the new regulations was set for April 2023, giving broadband and fixed voice services time to implement the changes. But, delays have been frequent as the change has proved to be a complex and difficult task to ensure industry-wide implementation.
Fortunately, the wait is now over.
How One Touch Switch Works: Revolutionising the Broadband Switching Process
One touch switch will revolutionise the process by making sure you can switch between different broadband technologies with minimal effort.
The one-touch switch process works in three simple steps:
- The customer will contact their preferred new provider to request the switch, providing their details.
- Then, important information such as any early contract termination fees will be automatically received by the customer from their current provider.
- With everything approved, the new provider will provide the contract and manage the switch by ceasing the old services and beginning the new services on a chosen, agreed date.
Benefits of One-Touch Switching: Why It’s Important for Consumers
Not only is the new process a much-welcomed change for telecom providers, it also addresses the common pain points and complaints that customers have raised about the current switching process.
Tired of listening to same old sales pitch about why you should stay on at your old provider? With the new regulations, you can save the hassle of having to sit through a call of persuasion, all the while knowing that your only objective is to cancel.
The update removes the biggest obstacle to switching: contacting multiple providers, both old and new. Instead, you’ll only need to contact your new provider and they will handle the entire process of cancellation on the other end.
Finally, one-touch switch significantly reduces the time involved so you can start enjoying your newer, faster broadband quicker than ever before.
All of these benefits have been designed with the consumer in mind to make it faster, easier and less time consuming for the customer’s broadband journey.
Different Scenarios for Switching Broadband Providers
There are a few different reasons you might have for switching providers. We’ve taken a look at the most common scenarios and how one-touch switching might be applied in each case:
- Switching within the same network – Currently, broadband operators on the Openreach broadband network can be easily switched between however you require a confirmation letter from both before you can proceed. With the new rules, work from the old and new companies must start immediately to meet the deadline so you won’t be stuck waiting around.
- Switching between different networks – Choosing a new network will be easier than ever with one-switch as you will only need to contact your new provider. Cancellations of the previous provider will be handled solely by the broadband company, giving you much-needed peace of mind.
- Switching a bundle – While this process is similar to switching providers, the new regulations put emphasis on providing key information on how your switch will impact any added extras such as TV and streaming packages. This makes it simpler to see how your move will affect your services across the board.
One-Touch Switching: What It Means for the Future of Broadband
The benefits of one-touch switching go beyond purely consumer satisfaction. With easier ways to switch to the competition, the new regulations will drive innovation and improve service quality.
This will lead to advancements in broadband technology like 5G and fibre optic networks being deployed faster so consumers will be able to experience faster and more reliable internet as a result.
